How does it work?

The geotechnical centrifuge at GeoDelft belongs to the beam-type. It has only one arm extended from the rotor.

At the other end of the centrifuge arm is hinged a container. Usually the experimentation take place inside this container. The hinge connection enables the container to swing up with the centrifugal forces. The ascending moment of the container is blocked on its way in order to compensate the 1-g component. The resulting "gravitational"  acceleration points downwards in the testing container as in the prototype or in the fixed world and is manyfold the Eearth’s gravity: N-g. This is of importance for the replication of physical processes by modelling. It can be used to investigate the influence of body forces due to self-weight.
